Stephanie Hunt was already a little confused when her boyfriend, David Teykaerts, came to her on Christmas Day in 2007 and gave her a box with nothing but a pillow in it; but she was totally lost when he announced the pillow was actually for him.

Clarity came quickly, however. David placed the pillow on the floor, put one knee on it and asked Stephanie to be his wife. The girl, who at first didn’t want to date him (because they worked together), didn’t hesitate to say yes and they were married less than a year later.

They put themselves on a strict budget, but that didn’t stop them from making their wedding day everything they wanted. For starters, they picked a venue, Cameron Park Lake, which was special to both of them. They’d spent a lot of time there in the summer, swimming, lying in the sun and enjoying each other and the beauty of the place.

They both wanted a traditional ceremony but customized it by adding their own special touch to the vows; they both agreed to write something for each other and read it aloud.

Stephanie thought it was only supposed to be a few sentences, so, as she unfurled a tiny piece of paper, she was a little taken aback when she saw what David had.

“I had a paragraph, and he had a page,” she says with a laugh. “But he’s always had a way with words, and what he said was so beautiful; everyone was crying, and after the ceremony some of my girlfriends were mock-proposing to him. He told me I was simply the best; the best woman and best friend he could have. It was so sweet.”

It also made for a nice break from the traditional ceremony and created a special, unrehearsed moment where they could just speak right to each other.

For their first dance, they chose “I’m Kissing You” by Des’ree, which has always been one of Stephanie’s favorite songs, despite being rather obscure. She knew she was marrying the right guy when he told her that he not only knew the song, but it was also one of his favorites. That, along with their mutual love for the show Frasier (together they own the complete series and watch it daily), cemented the deal.

As for the reception, Stephanie had only one requirement: there absolutely had to be sushi on the table. “We wanted something that would be a little different,” she says. Okay, she also admits that she’s something of a sushi freak. “I have sushi at least twice a week,” she says a little sheepishly. “Most people who know me know I could eat sushi every day.”
The two still work together, although on separate floors now, which means getting together for lunch every day is still special. “We’re just so happy to be in each other’s company,” Stephanie says. “If I had to describe us, it’d just be three words: laughter, fun, and Frasier.”

Any tips you'd give to brides and grooms planning their wedding:
If someone close to you offers help, take it! Trying to take care of every detail yourself will not only drive you nuts but also your husband-to-be! Also, a wedding doesn't have to cost you $20,000 or more for it to be the best day of your life. I had my dream wedding for a reasonable cost; it just takes a little more work.
What would you have done differently if you had the chance?
I would not have stressed so much about all of the details because by the last week everything ended up changing.
