The day before departing for vacation in Mexico proved to be more exciting than the vacation itself for Liz and Justin. On the sixth of each month, Liz and Justin would celebrate their first date at their favorite bagel shop in Davis. On this particular first date anniversary, Justin told Liz that since they couldn’t be in Davis, he wanted to bring Davis to her and went on to present her with a postcard from their cherished city. On the postcard was a sweet note to Liz with several letters highlighted. Liz immediately noticed the highlighted letters, but it took her some time before realizing these letters spelled out, “will you marry me?”

Upon returning from their Mexican vacation, the couple immersed themselves in their wedding plans. After selecting the Sacramento Grand Ballroom as their venue, the couple then turned to their favorite colors—pink and blue—for inspiration. Liz selected shades of pink and blue that complemented each other, just as she and Justin do, and from there, a vibrant wedding came to life.

To accompany the lively ambiance, the couple set out to have a candy cart for their wedding favors. Liz’s father took on the challenge and built a magnificent cart by hand, specially for his daughter’s wedding.

Justin’s dad also got in on the wedding action and along with the lead singer of his band, The Volker Strifler Band, performed an original song “On a Day Like Today,” for the couple’s first dance. The evening was full of special touches, including a few from the groom. At the reception Justin gave a speech in which he addressed his family, Liz’s family, the wedding party and, of course, his new wife. Liz describes the speech as “emotional, special and one of the best parts of the day.” Liz, a graphic designer, added her own special touches to the wedding celebration by designing the invitations and place settings. With each unique addition, the wedding turned out to be exactly what Liz and Justin wanted and so much more.

After the lively affair, the couple wisely took two weeks after the wedding to recover before departing for their honeymoon in Turks and Caicos.

Any tips you'd give to brides and grooms planning their wedding:
Take the time to add special personal touches, plan ahead and be organized; however on the day of your wedding, do absolutely nothing but enjoy each other and celebrate your love. In addition, remember that not everything will go as planned so do you best to not stress out and enjoy every second of your special day together. It will fly by and be over before you know it.

Anything else about your wedding?
  • The candy cart was extremely special to us since it was built by my (Liz’s) dad (Ron Raley)
  • First dance was very sentimental and special since it is one of Justin’s dad’s band’s song and was performed live by his dad (Don Bassey) and lead singer (Volker Strifler)
  • We were married by my (Liz’s) uncle (Pastor Glen Raley)
  • Justin’s cufflinks were the Superman logo
  • Pink socks and Pink shoes
  • The grandmas and moms all got up for a special performance for Justin and I and sang “You Have to Give A Little”
  • The Best Man wrote his speech on a roll of toilet paper!
  • For our invitations we used boxes, ribbon and crystals, all custom made by myself (Liz) and Annette Chow of Chow Designs.
  • For our thank you cards, I drew “Thank You” on a parasol and asked our photographer to take a picture that we would then put on a card to use as our thank you cards. We also included a DVD slideshow of our wedding pictures so the guests would be able to view them in a fun and unique way.
  • Justin and I wrote custom intro’s for each member of the bridal party and chose and appropriate song fitting to each person’s personality

Vendors:
  • Martha Andrews of Blooms by Martha was the such an amazing woman to work with. We knew after meeting her once, she was going to be our florist! Her positive attitude, attention to detail, friendliness and unique style won us over. She worked within our budget and gave us everything we could have ever imagined and SO much more! She put so much time and dedication into each piece, that people talked about her work for months after the wedding! You can tell she loves her job and makes it a point to give every couple exactly what they are looking for. She really went above and beyond her normal duties to help make our dream come true.
  • Josh White of Friction Studio, created a BEAUTIFUL custom website for our guests to visit in order to read about our story, look at pictures, get information about our big day, sign a guestbook and set up links to our registries. He made everything we asked for come to life on the web.
  • Beth Baugher of True Love Photography is one of the best photographers in Sacramento and the surrounding areas! This woman is SUPER talented, generous, organized, hilarious and has a heart of gold. You can see how passionate she is about photography in her pictures and the time and dedication she puts towards each individual photo. She did an AMAZING job throughout the whole day and captured beautiful memories of our big day that we will cherish forever.

What would you have done differently if you had the chance?
The only thing we would have done differently is hire a videographer. We thought we didn’t need one and wanted to save money, but now we wish we could go back and watch parts of our wedding day we missed while taking pictures and it would be nice to see our wedding from another perspective. Other than that, our wedding was everything we wanted it to be and perfect in our eyes. We truly are lucky and had the fairytale wedding we always dreamed of!
